What Is Tattoo Numbing Cream?
Getting inked is a great way to express your personality and your true self, but it’s fair to say that tattooing can be painful! Tattoos hurt varying amounts depending on where they’re place, the tattoo type and whether the artist is applying colour or an outline. If you’re keen to get some body art but don’t want to suffer, using a tattoo numbing cream could be the ideal solution. As you might imagine from its name, numbing cream numbs the skin after application so you don’t experience any pain when you go under the needle.
Why Use Numbing Cream?
Although some diehard ink fans insist that pain is a rite of passage, there’s absolutely no need to endure agony while you’re getting tattooed. In fact, application of a little numbing cream could make all the difference between getting your artwork finished and having to return for another session. You’ll find tattoo numbing cream especially helpful if you’re getting a tattoo in an especially sensitive area like your ankle, wrist or elbow.
How Is Tattoo Numbing Cream Applied?
It couldn’t be easier to apply tattoo numbing cream to the area that is going to be worked on. Just wash the skin well, apply the cream in a generous layer, cover it with plastic wrap and leave for about 45 minutes before work begins on your tattoo. Remember, though, never leave the cream on for more than an hour. Your tattooist will wipe away the cream using a cloth before they apply the stencil to your skin.
You should wear disposable rubber gloves when you’re applying the numbing cream or even when you’re touching it. After all, nobody wants numb fingers!
What Will My Skin Feel Like If I Use Numbing Cream?
When you first apply a tattoo numbing cream to your skin you won’t feel any different. This is because it doesn’t become activate straight away. You will need to wait for at least 30 minutes until you start to notice the effects. Once the cream has been activated, though, you’ll feel virtually no pain (or even no pain at all) for up to an hour although the effect gradually reduces over the following hour or two.
Do I Need To Tell The Tattoo Artist I’ve Used Numbing Cream?
Yes, you should tell your artist before getting your ink that you intend to use numbing cream. Some tattooists won’t work on you if you’ve used numbing creams, so you need to let them know in advance.
If your tattooist says that it’s ok for you to use a tattoo numbing cream, you should choose one that is water-based rather than glycerine-based as it won’t leave your skin slippery during the tattooing process.
How Do Numbing Creams Work?
Tattoo numbing creams can generally be termed topical anaesthetic creams. Most commonly, they’re used in dental and doctor’s surgeries to help relieve pain during minor procedures or injections.
Most often, numbing creams contain lidocaine as their active ingredients, but some contain tetracaine or benzocaine. All have the same local anaesthetic effect and have been used successfully by the medical profession for years. The active pharmaceutical ingredients (or APIs) in the cream act as a nerve pain impulse blocker so when the tattoo needle enters your skin you don’t experience any discomfort or pain.
Should I Try A Tattoo Numbing Cream?
If you’re planning a new tattoo it’s definitely worth considering using a numbing cream if you want to avoid any pain during the inking process. Without any distracting discomfort, you’ll be able to enjoy the experience of getting your dream piece of body art!
